Back to back breathing

Image
During one of our Circle Time sessions, we talked about the emotion of 'Feeling angry' or 'Kei te pukuriri'.  We talked about how it is ok to feel angry at times and how it is a perfectly normal feeling.  We then talked about what makes us angry, how our body and mind feels when we are angry and shared ways to calm ourselves down. One strategy the children know is breathing so we learnt a new breathing technique called Back to Back Breathing.  The children sit back to back with someone and feel their partner breathing, their shoulders going up and down. We practiced with a buddy and the children really enjoyed it.  They said they felt relaxed, calm and sleepy.

Warm fuzzy jar

We have finally filled our Warm Fuzzy Jar.  In Room 8, when the whole class work quietly, meet their goals or really impress the teacher, they receive a Warm Fuzzy for their jar. When the jar is half full, then full, they receive a treat.  The class voted to receive free time on Wednesday afternoon with a movie and popcorn. Well done Room 8. The photos below show the children enjoying their chosen activity during their reward time.

New cushion for Room 8 boys

Image
As you may be aware, the Leader for the day has a number of cushions they are able to give out to children to sit on.  There has always been a girls and boys cushion.  Both these cushions were rather old and needed replacing.  Unfortunately, there were plenty of girls cushions available in the shops but no boys cushions. Realising we had a problem, Izack mentioned this to his parents and they kindly sent this cushion in for the Room 8 boys to use.  Thanks to Izack and his whanau for the loan of this cushion.  The Room 8 boys think its great!

Kadodo African Drum and Dance

Image
The Junior and Lower Middle School children were lucky to see and be part of a performance by a group called Kadodo.  The three members of the group performed drumming routines and taught a group of children a drumming routine to perform to us.  A number of other children (and all the teachers) were also able to go up and have a chance to perform. We all loved the drumming, chanting and dancing.  Ruby A is 3rd from the right and Charley is next to the drummer.  The children all had fun clapping to the rhythms of the drums.  Luca has a turn at drumming for us.  Phoebe also had a turn at performing. Erika and Ben are waiting for their turn to perform on the drums for us.
